Torri del Benaco sul Lago di Garda: cosa vedere, spiagge e consigli utili

Torri del Benaco on Lake Garda: what to see, beaches, and useful tips

Between centuries-old olive trees and cliffs that drop sheer into the water, Torri del Benaco remains one of the most authentic villages on the eastern shore of Lake Garda.

Anyone who arrives here notices it immediately: the large flow of tourists prefers to head towards Malcesine or Garda, and this is precisely what makes the village so pleasant to experience. Narrow alleys, a small harbor where fishing boats are still in use, and a castle museum that tells the story of the area in a way that is anything but predictable. In this guide, you will find everything you need to organize your visit, from the best beaches to the most interesting excursions in the surrounding area.

What to see between the historic center and the beach

Torri del Benaco can be visited comfortably in half a day, but those with more time will find much more to explore among beaches, trails, and small hamlets. The village is small, but the surrounding area is rich in offerings.

Overview

The village is located on the eastern coast of the lake, in the province of Verona, within what is known as the Riviera degli Olivi (Olive Riviera). It is about 40 kilometers from Verona; from Peschiera del Garda, you can arrive in just over half an hour by following the coastal road. The population is about 3,000, distributed between the historic center and the two hamlets of Albisano and Pai.

One look at the harbor is enough to understand how closely the village's history is tied to fishing. The Confraternity of Fishermen of Torri and Garda was founded way back in 1452 and is still active today.

Beaches

Those who arrive at Lake Garda want to swim, which is only natural. Torri del Benaco offers several options, all very different in character and target audience.

Baia Stanca Beach

A gravel beach just south of the center, surrounded by olive trees that provide precious shade in the summer. The water drops off quickly, so it is better suited for those who love to swim than for families with small children.

Parco Baia delle Sirene Beach

Probably the best-known beach in the area, set within a small natural park on the point between Torri and Punta San Vigilio. Clear water, rocks for sunbathing, and an atmosphere that almost recalls a wild cove. During the high season, it is best to arrive early: access is limited.

Lido di Torri Beach

Located directly in the village, it is easily reachable on foot, with a lawn for sunbathing and good facilities. Ideal for those who don't want to walk too much but still want to enjoy the view of the Scaligero Castle.

Pai Beach

A bit further out in the hamlet of Pai, it is quieter and less crowded than the central beaches. A good option for those looking to stay away from the hustle and bustle of high season.

What to see

Scaligero Castle

The symbol of the town, which gave its name to Torri del Benaco: three towers characterize the fortress, whose origins likely date back to the Roman era. Its current form is thanks to Antonio della Scala, who expanded the structure in 1383 to protect the harbor. From then on, various rulers followed, from the Visconti to the Carraresi and eventually the Republic of Venice.

Until 1980, the castle was in a state of almost total neglect. It was the commitment of the community and the municipal administration that changed things: after the restoration, the Scaligero Castle Museum opened in 1983. Today, the ethnographic museum tells the history of fishing and olive cultivation on Lake Garda, with a room dedicated to the area's rock carvings and a model of the historic center from the early 20th century. The highlight, however, remains the Limonaia, an 18th-century citrus greenhouse with ancient plants, one of the few still existing on the entire lake.

Historic center and harbor

Narrow alleys, warm-colored facades, and a glimpse of water around every corner. Walking through the historic center immediately reveals the difference compared to larger neighboring towns: almost no retail chains, but instead fishing boats still in use. The small harbor with its characteristic pier is one of the most photographed spots in the village, especially at sunset.

Punta San Vigilio

A few kilometers to the north lies one of the most elegant points on the entire lake. Cypresses, a small private harbor, and the famous Villa Guarienti make up the landscape. It is worth making a detour, even if only for a photo.

Monte Baldo

If you look up, you will see it immediately: Monte Baldo, the mountain massif that dominates the eastern shore of the lake. For those who love to hike, it is the ultimate destination in the area; we discuss it further in the dedicated activities section.

Activities

Sailing and windsurfing

The wind on the eastern shore of Lake Garda is considered reliable by sailors, especially in the afternoon with the "Ora," which blows from the lake towards the mountains. Several schools in the area offer courses for beginners and those looking to improve their skills.

Biking and mountain biking

The Riviera degli Olivi is well-suited to being discovered by bicycle, among olive groves, small bays, and scenic viewpoints. For those who are more athletic, there are routes that climb towards Albisano, offering more elevation gain but also more views.

Ferry to Maderno

One of the most practical and at the same time most scenic connections on the lake is the car ferry to Toscolano Maderno, operated by Navigazione Laghi. The crossing takes about 30 minutes, and in high season, there are connections every half hour, less frequently during the rest of the year. Those wishing to reach the western shore thus avoid the long drive around the lake.

Excursions on Monte Baldo

The classic excursion from Torri del Benaco goes through nearby Malcesine. From there, the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car takes visitors in about 20 minutes up to an altitude of 1,760 meters, to the Tratto Spino station. The cabin for the second section rotates completely during the ascent, a panoramic experience that shows the lake, the Alps, and the Po Valley all at once. Once at the top, you will find trails for every level, as well as paragliders and, in summer, mountain bike trails. The facility remains open almost all year round, with maintenance breaks in March and November.

Travel Info

Best time and duration of stay

The high season on Lake Garda runs from June to September, when water temperatures and weather conditions are most reliable. Those who prefer tranquility can choose May or September, with less crowded beaches and slightly lower prices. For a first visit, two or three days are sufficient; for those who also want to include Monte Baldo or Punta San Vigilio, it is advisable to plan for a week.

How to arrive and get around

The nearest airport is Verona, about an hour away by car; alternatively, you can consider Bergamo or Brescia. It is advisable to have a car locally, as many of the most beautiful spots, from Punta San Vigilio to the beaches outside the center, are difficult to reach without your own transportation. Inside the village, however, Torri del Benaco can be easily explored on foot, and the historic center is closed to traffic.

Cuisine and specialties

The local cuisine is built around two ingredients: olive oil and lake fish. The extra virgin olive oil from this area even has its own PDO (DOP) label, a quality guarantee that you can perceive at every market stall.

Anyone walking in the Limonaia of the Scaligero Castle quickly understands why citrus fruits have been part of local culture for centuries; their scent can still be smelled among the old greenhouses. It is precisely this blend of citrus, olives, and lake air that stays longest in the memory of those who visit Lake Garda, often more than the photographs themselves. A fragrance capable of capturing this atmosphere is, for many, the most natural way to take a piece of Torri del Benaco home.

Hotels and accommodations

From small family-run guesthouses in the historic center to hotels overlooking the lake with direct beach access, Torri del Benaco offers a fairly wide range of accommodations. Those who want to be in the center will find the shortest distances in the historic village; those looking for tranquility can head towards Albisano or Pai, both just a few minutes away by car.

A fragrance to remember Torri del Benaco

There is a moment in the early afternoon when the wind changes direction on the lake. It is the "Ora," that warm breeze that rises from the plains and accompanies the sailboats along the coast—the same one you breathe while walking among the olive trees of the Riviera. Its notes contain wood, water, and citrus, a blend that closely recalls the air of the Scaligero Castle's Limonaia. Ora Eau de Parfum by Terre del Garda was born from this very breath of the lake, for those who want to rediscover it even far from here.
