The origins of Malcesine: Etruscans and Lombards
The history of Malcesine has its roots in distant times. As far back as antiquity, people settled on these splendid shores.
-
Archaeologists have found the first traces of the Etruscans in the region.
-
Around the year 500 A.D., the Lombards reached Lake Garda.
-
They built the first fortress on the prominent castle rock.
-
This strategic position protected the inhabitants from aggressors.
The town's name likely has its roots in that remote era. It is presumably derived from ancient names indicating a settlement on the rock.
The Middle Ages: Scaligers, Visconti and the Venetians
The Middle Ages profoundly marked the urban appearance of Malcesine. Three great powers successively vied for supremacy over the lake.
Malcesine under the Scaligers
Starting in 1277, the Scaliger family of Verona took power.
-
A significant era began for Malcesine.
-
The city was transformed into an important fortress.
-
The Scaliger Castle took on its current appearance.
-
It is still the symbol of the city today.
You can still admire the imposing architecture today while taking a walk.
The Visconti and the transition to Venice
The Scaliger rule ended in 1387. The Visconti family of Milan briefly took the reins. However, their period of governance did not last long.
By 1405, Malcesine had passed to the Republic of Venice. Venice brought stability and economic growth to the entire region.
The Gardesana dell'Acqua: Malcesine as capital of the lakeside federation
In 1351, the Gardesana dell'Acqua was born. This was a union of ten municipalities on the lake shore. Malcesine assumed a central role in this federation.
The town was the seat of the Captain of Lake Garda. He administered the union and ensured peace on the waters.

Goethe in Malcesine: almost arrested as a spy
In September 1786, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the town.
-
His arrival was anything but quiet.
-
Goethe sat on the shore and drew the ancient Scaliger castle.
-
The locals watched the stranger with great suspicion.
-
They mistook him for an Austrian spy.
-
An official stopped the poet and interrogated him sternly.
Fortunately, Goethe managed to clear up the misunderstanding. He later described this adventure in his famous work Italian Journey.
From Napoleon to the Kingdom of Italy
The 19th century was an era of great change. The political map was constantly shifting during this phase.
-
In 1796, French troops under Napoleon occupied the region.
-
From 1801, Malcesine was part of the Cisalpine Republic.
-
After Napoleon's fall, the town came under Austrian rule.
-
Only in 1866 did Malcesine become part of the new Kingdom of Italy.
This era brought with it modern administrative structures and the first sightseeing visits to the lake.
